Sorgho Squad
Book Review
Chapter 1
The somewhat eccentric Professor Sorgho has given his life to the study of nutritional challenges and various forms of sustainability. He wants nothing more than to help humanity, and he’s willing to take some unusual approaches that others shun. Backed up by his cohort Alice Atlas, the professor has stumbled onto a long-lost team of superpowered individuals who he believes can help him in his quest. They are scattered across the globe, though. Now, with the clock ticking, the intrepid professor and his equally dedicated teenage sidekick are on a mad dash from location to location. The very fate of the planet and its many lifeforms hangs in the balance.
Sorgho Squad: Chapter #1 From the Ruins Comes Jowar, by Nate Blum, is a graphic novel that might remind some readers of the popular Captain Planet cartoon series from the early 90s. The concepts of these sorts of creative endeavors are usually a little hokey, but there’s no denying they’re well intentioned and serve a valuable purpose.
Though relatively short, this comic book is packed with evocative full-color illustrations and expansive ideas. Sustainability, hunger, and the potential extinction of various species are even more of legitimate issues now than they were in Captain Planet’s time. Blum does an excellent job of presenting them in a way that grabs the attention of younger readers.
In addition to the dynamic illustrations, the characters are compelling enough to make the reader want to know more about them and their origins. While the Professor and Alice are the lynchpins for the action, the tantalizing glimpse that readers get of Jowar should be more than enough to stimulate their imaginations. Would that all of the Earth’s problems could be solved as easily as this heroic entity seems to believe.
This is clearly just the opening chapter in a much larger work, and most readers will be anxious to know what happens next. That’s usually the intention of a serial-style comic book series, and the author is able to achieve that goal admirably.

An Imaginative Comic with a Timely Message
In Sorgho Squad: Chapter #1: From the Ruins Comes Jowar! by Nate Blum, we meet the somewhat eccentric Professor Sorgho, a man dedicated to addressing nutritional challenges and sustainability. His lifelong research has led him to discover a mysterious ancient super team, lost to the ages. Determined to help humanity, he isn’t afraid to pursue unconventional methods. With the support of his cohort, Alice Atlas, the professor believes this superpowered team can aid in his mission. As they race against time to reassemble the Sorgho Squad, they journey across the globe, with the fate of the planet and its diverse lifeforms hanging in the balance.
Blum’s graphic novel is reminiscent of the Captain Planet cartoon series from the early ’90s, which I loved watching as a child. However, Blum’s works provides a fresh, modern twist. While such creative endeavors can sometimes seem a bit hokey, there’s no denying their good intentions and valuable messages. Though the comic book is relatively short, it is filled with vibrant full-color illustrations and expansive ideas. Topics such as sustainability, hunger, and potential species extinction are even more relevant now than they were during Captain Planet’s time, and Blum presents them in a way that is captivating.
The impressive illustrations and well-developed characters of Sorgho Squad made it so I was invested in the story and wanted to learn more about their origins. Professor Sorgho and Alice Atlas are central to the narrative, but the tantalizing glimpse of Jowar sparks the imagination. The hope that Earth’s problems could be solved as easily as this heroic entity believes adds an optimistic touch to the story.
This is just the first chapter of a much larger work, leaving me eager to know what happens next. Blum hooked me from the start and kept me invested throughout the unfolding adventure. Will Professor Sorgho and Alice find the scattered members of the Sorgho Squad in time? Only future installments will tell, and I look forward to finding out.

Love this series
Professor Sorgho and his young charge, Alice, are on a mission. They are concerned that Earth is succumbing to climate change, which is bringing on droughts, food shortages, and similar issues. To combat this, the somewhat eccentric professor and Alice are in the midst of reviving a legendary group of superheroes whose powers are rooted in sustainable grains. They have enlisted the help of Jowar, the first of this enclave, but now, they must locate and awaken the others. This quest will send them globe hopping in a race against time. The next member of the group that must be found is Mashilla, purveyor of healthy, bountiful food.
Sorgho Squad: Chapter 2, by Nate Blum, is the second volume in a comic book or graphic novel series focused on sustainability efforts. Fans of movies like FernGully: The Last Rainforest and similar fare from the 90s will recognize some of the more prevalent themes.
These concepts of sustainability and the hunt for renewable resources are even more vital now than they were in the closing years of the 20th century. Because of this, it’s important to teach kids to recycle, compost, avoid wasting food, and generally do what they can do reduce their carbon footprint.
Blum clearly has all of this in mind, and he explains it in simple, direct terms that young children should be able to understand without difficulty. This comic series is intended for individuals ages 6-12 and is modeled after their sensibilities. The art is colorful and vibrant, while the characters are painted in broad strokes. There’s not a lot of nuance or subtext behind what is taking place, but there doesn’t need to be.
While there are no supervillains to be seen here, the threat this collective faces, namely, the gradual destruction of the planet and its resources, creates a sense of urgency. The heroes are ethnically diverse, the message noble, and their adventures a joy to read about. Parents should feel good about the message this series conveys and fans both young and old will doubtless eagerly anticipate the next installment.

Great Series
The adventures continue for the oddball Professor Sorgho and his faithful sidekick, Alice. The comically mismatched pair are on a mission to revive a group of superheroes who use ancient grains as the source of their powers. They located and awakened Jowar in the Mohenjo-Daro ruins and Mashilla in Ethiopia. The final member of the trio is the puckish Milo, who similarly has not been seen for centuries. This quartet is off to find him, and they will let nothing stand in their way. At stake are the lives and futures of many communities around the world who are feeling the insidious impact of climate change.
Sorgho Squad: Chapter 3, by Nate Blum, is the third installment of a comic book series that tries to teach lessons about sustainability. It takes up the fight begun by such luminaries as Captain Planet and the Planeteers in the 90s.
The concepts introduced in this series are noble and exceedingly straightforward. Blum and artist Jordan Scribner, with whom he has collaborated, are intent on teaching young people about the environmental threats that the planet faces and the impact they are having on communities worldwide.
It’s something children should be thinking about, and evoking the concept with multiethnic, colorful characters is a stroke of genius. Young people are attracted to dynamism, and this series has no shortage of it. Even more so than previous installments, both Blum and Scribner seem to be hitting their stride. This edition is not as exposition-based and instead focuses more on the action. The art is imaginative, and the scope of the character’s exploits would rival that of any Indiana Jones movie.
It should come as no surprise that the group of seekers is successful in pinpointing where Milo has been in stasis. What’s unclear is where the action is going from here. While realism is completely unnecessary in any comic book, this is one that deals with a real-life threat. Readers may find themselves curious about what tangible solutions Blum plans to propose now that his trio of heroes are reunited. Hopefully, future installments will bring all of that to light.
